Background
In 2012 -2018, Australia and New Zealand successfully completed a Plant Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre project 4041 ‘Building Resilience in Indigenous Communities through Engagement – a Focus on Biosecurity Threats’. The project presented traditional Indigenous knowledge and Western knowledge into a framework designed to assist stakeholders to improve their understanding of cross-cultural communication in biosecurity that enhanced Indigenous communities, regulatory authorities and industry agencies to engage. The Indigenous Engagement Models were developed. The models provide a platform to assist Indigenous peoples and biosecurity agencies to communicate and collaborate on biosecurity threats to native plants and commercial crops between key interest groups.
Objectives and impact
This project aims to continue to build plant biosecurity capacity and awareness for Indigenous Engagement Model on Myrtle Rust in Australia. The aim will be implementing a campaign to diseminate the Indigenous Engagement Model for plant biosecurity to engage key stakeholders.
The project team experienced significant challenges implementing the project and have agreed to close the project.
